Year 7, Vol. 1 - May 7, 2022

On May 6, 200, the Governor of Puerto Rico, Pedro Pierluisi, signed Law 19-2022 to amend Law 49-1987, known as the Special Sports Leave Law. Under Law 19-2022, employee athletes who are certified by the Puerto Rico Olympic Committee to represent Puerto Rico in the Olympic Games, Pan American Games, Central American Games, or in any regional or world championships may take up to ninety (90) consecutive workdays per year as a sports leave in order to train for or participate in any of the aforementioned events. Prior to the amendment, the law provided a maximum of forty-five (45) workdays per year.

NOTE: All other requirements established under Law 49-1987 for taking a sports leave remain unchanged by Law 19-2022.

What should employers do?

Employers are advised to review Law 19-2022 and amend their employee manuals and company policies to reflect the increase in the maximum of workdays allowed under the sports leave to ninety (90) days.
